Maryland Governor Wes Moore has been officially awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his meritorious service during his deployment to Afghanistan 18 years ago. The private ceremony took place at the governor’s residence in Annapolis, where Lt. Gen. Michael Fenzel, Moore’s former commander and close friend, presented the medal.

This recognition comes after a recent controversy regarding Moore’s previous claims about receiving the Bronze Star. In 2006, during his application for a White House fellowship, Moore stated that he had been awarded the medal, based on assurances from his superiors that the necessary approvals were in place and the paperwork was forthcoming. However, the administrative process was never completed, and the medal was not officially awarded at that time.

The discrepancy came to light earlier this year, prompting Moore to apologize for what he described as an “honest mistake.” Upon learning of the oversight, Lt. Gen. Fenzel took immediate action to rectify the situation, resubmitting the necessary paperwork to ensure Moore received the honor he had earned. The citation was signed on November 19, and Moore was informed of the award on December 14 by U.S. Army Secretary Christine Wormuth during the Army-Navy football game.
